"Widely regarded as one of Wales’ foremost traditional bands, since their formation in 1996, Allan Yn Y Fan have taken Welsh traditional music all over the world. Wednesday 28th March, however, saw the band performing closer to home with a gig at one of their favourite venues, Blackwood Miner’s Institute. The evening took the format of two halves with an interval and this six piece band entertained us with a selection of traditional Welsh songs and tunes interspersed with original compositions, mainly from the pen of founder member Kate Strudwick but also with contributions from Chris Jones and Alan Cooper. All the music was taken from across the band’s 22 year career and took us on a journey from the Festival Interceltique at L’Orient to sparsely attended performances in Ireland before returning to Wales across a stormy Irish Sea, stopping to remember Kate’s former landlady and her cat along, the way. The songs were mainly entrusted to Catrin O’Neill who, since joining the band in 2015, has taken on the role of lead vocalist and her vocal style adds a haunting quality to such songs as Dafydd Y Garreg Wen and Lisa Lân, both of which take the passing of a loved one as their subject matter, Catrin’s versatility means she is equally at home singing about hopeful love, as in Ym Mhontypridd Mae’n Nghariad, or the celebratory staples of the Mari Lwyd in Pwnco and Canu Cwnsela or rousing songs of workers' rights, as in Gorthrwm Y Gweithiwr with its dire warning to the Victorian Ironmasters of Beaufort. This evening had all the ingredients needed to make a memorable performance, six talented performers who obviously enjoy performing together and transmitted that joy through their music to an appreciative audience, a quality venue with friendly staff and a crystal clear sound system ensuring that none of the music’s nuances were lost. It was a pleasure to attend this concert and I look forward to seeing Allan Yn Y Fan perform again in the not too distant future. "

"Thank you so much for being able to accommodate us on the wedding of my son! What with atrocious weather causing extensive flooding that weekend and having to postpone the wedding from the Saturday night until the Sunday, we were more than grateful that the band was still willing and able to perform on the Sunday. Great music and excellent calling made the evening, with all participants thoroughly enjoying themselves - sometimes with a little over enthusiasm! I highly recommend this band to any future clients booking. The band were more than helpful - especially Jennie with all my questions and the band on the day were superb. "

"Willow Tree Barn Dance Band provided the music for my husband’s 70th birthday party. We found them to be most professional and organised, arrived in good time and nothing was too much trouble. The music and tuition were top notch. A fantastic evening of jollity and mayhem, with all of our guests young and old saying they had a most enjoyable evening. "

"Just realized that with all the end of term chaos I hadn't said thank you for getting our picnic up and dancing!! Thanks also for saving the day by arriving early at short notice when Britain's summer threw the best at us (and then some!!) and for being so flexible when things were so up in the air on arrival...definitely all the right decisions were made and everyone had a ball. "We are so grateful to Black Velvet Ceilidh Band for their last minute flexibility in playing for our wedding! We moved the wedding forward by a month to beat the lockdown and the band not only made themselves available on the new date, but also changed the style of music with just 3 days notice! Firstly their contactability and organisation was brilliant, making the booking and discussions with them hassle-free. Ceilidh would no longer have been appropriate, so the guys played a mix of Irish songs and jigs and reels. The music they provided was fantastic, creating the most beautiful atmosphere for the milling around and photo time between ceremony and reception. They were inconspicuous but added so much. Would definitely recommend them (and their versatility!) for any event.’"

There were over 100 peeps there and I would say nearly everyone has commented on how brilliant you were and how you made the night. Big Andy(the big fat loud boy) thinks you’re even better now compared to the wedding and we thought you were awesome then. Everybody had a great time which is mainly down to you guys.
