About / Biography

The richness provided by the accordion, powerful rhythm guitar and bodhran give a fullness of sound that belies the number of people on stage and with a repertoire encompassing fast and furious Celtic songs and tunes, gentle ballads and quality contemporary numbers by the likes of Christy Moore, Eric Bogle and Ewan MacColl as well as some original material, this East Midlands based band are one of the most sought after on the circuit.

The band was formed in 1983 with our vocalist, Tony, being one of the original line-up. Since then, Kellys Heroes have played to audiences including 40,000 people at the Glasgow Mayfest, 25,000 at the Heineken Big Top with The Pogues, a Chateau in France for a very exclusive birthday party and to 6 people in a kitchen for a family celebration as well as just about every other type of event you can imagine in between!

Some of the more memorable venues Kellys Heroes have played include The Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham, The Alexandra Palace, London, Stowe School, Buckingham, Camden Irish Centre, London, Kilburn Irish Centre, London, Rock City, Nottingham, Celtic Supporters Club, Glasgow, Leicester Tigers Stadium, Leicester, The Hammersmith Apollo, London.

We have also played the end of tour parties for the 'Threepenny Opera', 'Reasons To Be Cheerful' and 'Our Country's Good' theatre productions and the end of shoot parties for a couple of ITV series as well as being filmed as part of the story lines!

2016 saw the band undertake their first tour of Thailand, playing everywhere from bars to schools, performing at private parties and also for the Irish Ambassador. 2018 saw us touring throughout the UK with a short hop across to Malta in June for a tour organised by the Arts Council of Malta.

Kellys Heroes have recorded 13 albums with number 14 currently underway as well as individual band members appearing on many, many more.

Bookings are undertaken with a flexible line-up from a three-piece band up to a five-piece band plus caller. Instrumentation includes Vocals, Guitar, Button Accordion, Melodeon, Bodhran, Fiddle, Banjo and whistles depending on the line-up booked.

When playing for Ceilidhs and Barn Dances, Kellys always bring along a caller who works wonders at getting people involved in fun, easy traditional dances.

Kellys Heroes are available for festivals, folk clubs, pubs and clubs as well as all types of private functions, including weddings!

Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

For venues of 180 capacity or less, we provide our own PA equipment as well as two LED spot stage floor lights.
In the breaks, we can play pre recorded background music from an mp3 player through our PA or you can bring along your own so long as your device has a mini jack output.
We require two normal plug sockets close to the performance area.
All our electrical equipment is fully PAT tested and certificated and we have Public Liability Insurance cover. All certificates can be emailed to you or directly to the venue manager.

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

Yes we have our own PA suitable for indoor venues up to 150 capacity.

We also carry a small amount of on stage spot lighting.

What information do you require about a venue?

A good set of directions including any access issues (lots of stairs or a distance to carry equipment) and if the venue has a sound limiter in place.

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

No but we can either play pre recorded music from an MP3 player or we can link your own device and playlist through our PA for you during our break.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

In such a long time of being together as a band, this is an impossible question to answer! We've played some incredible venues and locations but it is always the people who make the gigs so memorable.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

We were all brought up listening to and watching The Dubliners and The Chieftains alongside The Pogues, Christy Moore and Sweeney's Men and we like to think that we pay tribute to their music in our own style of playing

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

Variety is the spice of life and we love to play for all sorts of events but family occasions are always just that little bit more special!

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

We ask for access to the venue one hour before the scheduled start of the performance to set up the band's equipment.
Standard performance times are 2 x 45 mins sets plus encores and, for barn dances/ceilidhs, a time slot of up to 2.5 hours, including breaks.

Are you happy to perform outside?

Yes but we do ask for there to be cover for the band to protect PA and instruments should the weather be very hot or rainy. There needs to be a safe and close power supply and a stable surface to perform on. At night there needs to be adequate lighting for the area.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

We're more than happy to do requests off our song list for you.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Good fun!
