"We were delighted with the organisation, performance and energy that the Country and Western Show provided for our party. Their enthusiasm and choice of music ensured that all of guests enjoyed themselves and the vast majority were active participants in the line-dancing. We could not have asked for a better country band." - Ben's review of Country and Western Show.
Ideal for:
Any event that has a strong US-theme will gain an extra level authenticity from having a country band perform. This could be anything from a birthday party or function to a high-end corporate event. Make sure to decorate your venue and ask your guests to dress accordingly!
When booking Country Bands:
Country bands come in many different forms and line ups. Some will be more traditional, with costumes and a repertoire to match. Others will cover more modern material and look more like a contemporary party band. For this reason, it is important to take a good look over all the relevant promotional materials your prospective band has. Remember, if you have any particular country classics that you would like to hear, get your requests over to your band in plenty of time. This will allow them to learn and rehearse the tune.
Due to their instrumentation, country bands may require more space than other acts. Always liaise with your contact in the band on their requirements and make sure your venue knows them.
Prices for Country Bands:
At their smallest, country bands will generally come as a duo - usually a singer (who may play an instrument) along with a guitar player, pianist or even fiddle player. In this set up, they will generally charge a minimum of £300. However, as more musicians are added to the line up, the price will increase. If you are looking to keep the price down, try using the "advanced search" feature to find country bands local to you.
About Country Music:
Country music (also known as Country and Western), is generally understood to have begun in the 1920's in the south of the United States of America, as a combination of Appalachian folk music, Irish and English traditional tunes and blues. It combined the sounds of the acoustic guitar, banjo, double bass and other traditional instruments. It flourished throughout the start of the 20th century, finding particular popularity in the 30s and 40s, with the inception of popular radio and barn dance shows, such as The Grand Ol' Oprey.
In the 50's and 60's, Country began to mix with other styles of music, and achieved far reaching appeal with sub-genres like Bluegrass and Honky Tonk. Johnny Cash emerged as one of the enduring stars of 'Rockabilly', an early style of Rock N Roll that was heavily influenced by country and a style of music that would prove integral to the beginnings of the career of one Elvis Aaron Presley.
The 1970's and 80's saw many singer/songwriters release hits that were heavily influenced by country music. John Denver, Willie Nelson and many others secured themselves as legends in the songwriting community with tunes likes "Take Me Home, Country Roads". Dolly Parton, a mainstay in country since the 60's, cemented her name in popular culture with hits like "Here You Come Again".
In the early 90's, country music became a world phenomenon thanks to the likes of Garth Brooks and The Dixie Chicks, heralding a new combination of country, pop and rock music that has continued to find an audience ever since. Modern stars like Taylor Swift, Lady Antebellum and Zac Brown are regularly performing in huge stadiums and events like C2C Country To Country festival in the UK, as well as putting out top ten records around the world.
