Strollers Funeral Band is a traditional New Orleans style marching jazz band. We have been playing together for funerals and memorials for over 15 years.
Parade bands are a central part of many occasions in New Orleans, and one such occasion at which they play a key role is a funeral or memorial service.
The band may play before, during, after the service and sometimes leading the coffin to the graveside. On occasions we may also be asked to play for the wake. All of this can be discussed.
The music, a repertoire of hymns and spirituals, respects the person who has died while also reflecting on the good times when they were alive.
It is common for us to perform songs of a gentle and pensive nature before the service, such as Just A Closer Walk With Thee, Amazing Grace, Lead Me Saviour and others. After the service it wouldn't be unusual for us to lift the atmosphere with brighter songs, which suggest more of a celebration of the life that has passed.
Lineups:
7-piece: trumpet, trombone, saxophone, clarinet, sousasphone, snare drum, bass drum
6-piece (usual line-up): trumpet, trombone, saxophone, sousaphone, snare drum, bass drum
5-piece: trumpet, trombone, saxophone, sousaphone, snare drum
3 and 4 piece: a parade band tends to need more musicians so while this is possible we prefer at least 5 musicians
If we are playing for a wake afterwards we might include a banjo in the line-up.

The musicians that make up the band have all toured the world, some have played on big stages to thousands, some of us have had original works performed in major concert halls, but we are a group of friends who are professional musicians that like entertaining people whatever the event. Some of our most memorable gigs have been playing to a small group of people helping to make a special occasion that little bit more special.
We are influenced largely by traditional New Orleans parade bands.
I've made my living as a freelance gigging musician since my 20's when I turned my back on a career in engineering. I've met many great musicians and friends on the way, and this band gathers some together.
We enjoy playing wherever we are valued and appreciated.
