About / Biography

The Hot Rock Brass Band is a band inspired by the New Orleans brass band tradition but also incorporating influences from many other cultures and genre’s – Jamaican, Eastern European, funk, Latin, gospel, jazz... This is all tied together with a sense of humour and fun giving the band their own unique sound. Sousaphone player Graham Hughes put the Hot Rock Brass Band together 2007, surrounding himself with a collection of highly versatile jazz musicians who could take a melody and turn it into an arrangement on the spot.

The band is all about spontaneity, energy, interaction and fun. Described as a band that “is totally impossible not to enjoy”, Hot Rock Brass Band has been inspiring people of all ages and tastes at clubs, arts centres and festivals across the UK.

The band plays their own arrangements of popular songs, classic New Orleans repertoire, interpretations of music from other genres as well as songs composed by members of the band. This gives the Hot Rock Brass Band their own unique sound unlike any other brass band.

They have recorded three albums. The second in Sarm Studios in West London and most recently in The Premises in East London in December 2011.

Available Line-ups:
Typical line-up: Drums, tuba and four horns.
Parade Line-up: As above with an extra drummer.
Smaller line-up: For short gigs or in small venues the band can function as a five piece.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

The musicians that make up the band have all toured the world, some have played on big stages to thousands, some of us have had original works performed in major concert halls, but we are a group of friends who are professional musicians that like entertaining people whatever the event. Some of our most memorable gigs have been playing to a small group of people helping to make a special occasion that little bit more special.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

We are all jazz musicians influenced by many of the great icons of jazz, and also by the other musicians we play with. We are continually learning. Hot Rock Brass is obviously hugely influenced by bands from New Orleans.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

We are all professional freelance musicians who have been gigging with hundreds of other musicians and bands over our lives.

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

We enjoy playing wherever we are valued and appreciated.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

Acoustic set-up: 5 to 10 minutes

Yes, as long as there is shelter in the case of wet weather, or blazing sunshine.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

Clients can make requests before the day, and where possible we will oblige.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

"You and the boys were ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS, you rocked it!!! Everyone was totally delighted with your performance, it couldn't have been more perfect. I do hope you also had a bit of fun." - Chelsea Arts Club Ball
