About / Biography

The West Highlands of Scotland has always been fertile ground for attracting and nurturing traditional talent and this grouping of musical giants is a testament to that. All based in the world-famous village of Glenfinnan (think Harry Potter & Hogwarts Express!), the GF Ceilidh Band members include stalwarts from the traditional music world who are as at home playing large concert venues as intimate bothy cèilidhs. The band have been together for over twenty-five years playing for weddings, birthdays, concert sets and any type of gathering you can think of.

Formed originally for the sheer fun of playing good music, together their unique blend of West Highland dance music will get your toes tapping no matter your age or stage in life! And supposing you've never done ceilidh dancing in your life this band will encourage and support you to learn the steps and join in to have as much fun as is legally possible at an event!

“A band you can actually dance to! A rare commodity in this ever-racing world, with a musicality that is very refreshing.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

We performed at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and had the whole of George Square doing ceilidh dancing. Great fun and a great way to keep fit!

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

Any instrumental Sottish music that gets you moving gets our vote!

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

All the Glenfinnan Ceilidh Band members have been playing music since a very young age. We formed together more than 25 years ago just for fun and we've now performed at literally hundreds of weddings, parties and events all over Scotland.

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

We love playing lots of difference events. Concerts are fun and our performances in theatres and at Folk Festivals have been memorable. But playing for weddings is already great fun. Everyone is so happy and totally up for dancing and joining in.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

We normally arrive an hour before the event time and need about 45mins to set up. We can cover a full evening event which might run from 7.30 - 11.30pm with a break but we can also do part of the night in one block if other entertainment is being used. We're happy to be flexible to suit the client and can do earlier if families are involved.

Are you happy to perform outside?

We're are happy to perform outside if we have a level surface that is sheltered and no midges!!

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

We have a repertoire of dances and pieces that we work from but clients are welcome to request Ceilidh Dances that they would like. We can also learn a special piece of music for a first dance if appropriate.
