About / Biography

Cello Magic consists of Cello + Backing Tracks. The cello is the perfect register for many songs. My songlist is developing constantly and I am happy to work with clients to source favourite music. If the backing track exists, I can arrange the song for cello. The songlist + audio tracks give an idea of what is possible for Cello Magic.

I have worked as a professional cellist for many years and have played in some wonderful concerts and for many events and weddings. I studied at the Guildhall School of Music and my early playing included solo recitals, freelance work with London Orchestras and theatres, recordings for groups at Abbey Road and I was Principal Cello of English Touring Opera for 12 years. I have enjoyed travelling around the world playing in concert halls and working on cruises. After moving to the North West, I continued freelancing with regional orchestras, in addition to teaching.

I have always played in background music gigs – string quartets at Covent Garden, weddings at Park Lane hotels and with the move up North working in venues such as Arley Hall, Hoghton Tower, Mottram Hall and many more.

Cello Magic is a new enterprise. I enjoy ‘playing the tune’ and this is my perfect opportunity! It is also ideal for smaller spaces – or if you are limited to numbers in a venue.

Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

- Chair
- For bigger inside drinks receptions, access to powerpoint for amp

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

For ceremonies, I use a bluetooth speaker. I find this is the perfect balance with the cello.
Outside, I use the bluetooth speaker if there is not access to electricity.

For bigger wedding drinks receptions inside, I provide my own sound system. For this, access to an electric plug it necessary.

What information do you require about a venue?

Most venues have parking. It would be useful to know nearest car parks/drop of places if the venue is in the city centre.

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

No

Do I need a 2 hour or a 3 hour booking?

2 hours will cover the ceremony (and some of the drinks reception if required)

3 hours will cover the ceremony and the whole drinks reception.

Can you move?

I can move after the ceremony to another location. This will take me about 10 minutes.

Can you play outside?

Yes. If the weather is good I can play outside.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

For weddings, I love playing on the Marble Staircase in Stockport Town Hall. The acoustics are great and really suit the cello. All gigs are enjoyable and I've played in a variety of venues such as; Saddleworth Hotel, Hirst Priory, Chadkirk Chapel, Sandhole, Oak Barn, Cragwood Country House Hotel, Talhenbont Hall Country Esatate, Hawkstone Hall, Alcumlow Hall Farm, Bentley Hotel Liverpool, Manchester Art Gallery and many more.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

The cello is very versatile and with all the backing tracks that are available, I can play most things. I haven't a favourite - I love lots of genres and songs! Everything from Bach to Beatles and beyond.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

My early days of playing were very solo based with recitals in a variety of venues. I then played more in orchestras and background string quartets, working in concert halls, cruises to stately homes in London and then in the North West. Cello Magic is a more recent venture which I started in lockdown and I am really enjoying. It is great to have come in a full circle and be back playing cello tunes!

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

I love playing anywhere, but wedding ceremonies (+drinks) are well suited to the cello.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

Set up: 30 minutes

Are you happy to perform outside?

Yes, if there is shade to protect from sun or cover from the rain.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

Clients can choose what I play from my list. This is growing all the time - please do request an updated list. If required, I can arrange one special song for the ceremony. For the drinks reception, I often play a mix from my list - choices depend on the age of guests, vib etc. There is no definitive 'set list' - unless created by the client.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Perfect instrument for the ceremony - very atmospheric.

For a ceremony, when do you start playing?

I usually start in the ceremony room about 10 minutes before, as the guests come into the room

How many pieces do I need to choose for the ceremony?

You will need to choose pieces for
Entrance of the 1st partner - one piece
Signing of the register - two pieces
Exit of the newly weds - one piece

Do I need to choose all the pieces/songs for the drinks reception?

That is completely up to you. Usually I play a mix of light music. You are welcome to choose some of your favourite pieces from my list for me to play.
