You don't always need a full live band to rock the party and make your event the best it can be. Sometimes just one bloke playing guitar and singing can do the trick, for a fraction of the price.
Although much of my work does involve fronting bands of various sizes for main-stage events and in environments where the dance floor needs to be kept full, there are also a great many occasions and venues where a good solo guitarist is all that is needed.
Broadly speaking there are two types of environment that my solo show is best suited for, each of which require very different sorts of material, but both of which are well suited to the format of one bloke and a guitar:
1) A small venue playing a lively gig, such as a birthday party or a Friday night in a pub or wine bar.
2) A big venue playing mellower background music, such as a wedding banquet, drinks reception or an outside gig earlier in the day.
It's not always that simple of course and many very successful solo gigs I have played do not fall into either of these categories. Flexibility is the name of the game, as is the ability to connect comfortably with an audience. There are not many audience situations that I have not at some point had to deal with.
