About / Biography

As the 80th anniversaries of VE Day and VJ Day approach, we have a unique opportunity to honour the incredible sacrifices made by our veterans. Comprised of veteran musicians who have served in various Army regiments, the Royal Marines, and the RAF Music Service, is available to bring a truly special touch to your commemoration.

With a combined total of 397 years of service to the Crown, our musicians offer not only remarkable musical talent but also an unmatched personal connection to the history they play. Their performances are infused with the spirit of service and the legacy of those who served during World War II and beyond.

We believe the Veterans Big Band is truly unique. Not only do we pride ourselves on our extraordinary history as veteran musicians, but we are also honoured to hold the Bronze Award of the Armed Forces Covenant—a recognition of our commitment to supporting veterans and the Armed Forces community. This makes us one of the few bands who can offer such a meaningful tribute with a direct connection to those who served.

Here’s how we can elevate your event:

  • Authentic wartime music including swing, big band classics, and cherished songs from the WWII era
  • A one-of-a-kind performance from musicians with 397 years of combined service in the Army, Royal Marines, and RAF Music Service
  • A meaningful way to honour veterans and the brave men and women who served, while offering a memorable experience for your guests
  • Recognition as a Bronze Award holder of the Armed Forces Covenant, showcasing our commitment to the Armed Forces community

We would be honoured to discuss how we can tailor our performance to fit your specific event and help make your VE and VJ Day celebrations truly memorable. Of course, we are also available for other events throughout the year.

We look forward to the opportunity to contribute to your celebrations and deliver a heartfelt tribute to our veterans.

Rushden RAF Charity event 500 people , also the Open air Armed Forces day Scunthorpe 5,000 people attended

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

We perform the classic Big Band charts of the 40's 50's and 60's Not just ww2 miller tunes. We love playing the music of Duke Ellington, Ted Heath, count Basie etc. No Buble!

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I set the band up 3 years ago to feature the talented musicians who served in the various bands of the Armed forces. I served in the Royal Artillery band in the late 70's and early 80's.

We now have a collective 397 years of service to the Crown.

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

Because of the size of the band and the sound we produce, we are best suited to large events of, say, 300 plus if we are required to perform outside, then staging and cover are required. Indoor events need to be large enough to accommodate audiences of 200+

We normally arrive 2 hours before the performance to set up. We normally perform 2 x 45 minutes or 2 x 60 minute sets with a 30 min break . We’re happy to play a bit longer or shorter but we’ve found that these set times suit us and our audiences best."

We tailor the sets to the client's requirements, providing it is the library and is in keeping with the era we fit into. As I said, not too much Miller and no Buble!

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Recent Clients

The Veterans Big Band has performed for these clients:

I had the honour of representing our town at a special concert of The Veteran’s Big Band hosted by the Rushden & District Veteran's Group at the Park Road Baptist Church in Rushden on Saturday 18th June.

The Veterans Big Band, started by Band Leader Ron Moonesinghe, which consists of former musicians from the Royal Marines, the Army, and the Royal Air Force bands, delivered an exceptional performance. Their expertise and the rich, full sound of classic band music filled the church, creating and cheery atmosphere mixed with and a little nostalgia too. The band's recent Bronze Award of the Armed Forces Covenant recognises their excellence and the important role they play in our veteran community. Some members of the Band had performed at His Majesty The King’s Coronation and at the funeral of the late Queen Elizabeth.

Such events remind us of the connections and shared values that knit our communities together. They offer a space for reflection on our past and a celebration of our present. I am always inspired by these expressions of community spirit and am grateful for opportunities to attend and support them.
