The Jubilee Dance Orchestra is an authentic 1920s jazz band, set up in October 2014, whose entire repertoire consists of transcriptions of original scores and recordings from the art deco era. Playing on vintage instruments of the time, this 12-piece ensemble takes a step back to an age where dance halls brimmed with luxury and glamour, and the celebrities were the stars of the silver screen.
The band prides itself on authenticity, meticulously studying old photos and programs from the archives of once famous bandleaders such as Jack Hylton, Joe Daniels and Henry Hall. Much of their library contains well-used second hand sheet music, acquired from antique markets and the backrooms of music shops, and includes titles such as "Charleston", "Five Foot Two" and "Jubilee Stomp". The remainder of the repertoire is arranged in house, painstakingly transcribed by ear from dusty 78 rpm records. The vintage instruments played by the orchestra's members create a sound that simply can not be replicated on modern instruments.
The band members (the majority of which are graduates of Leeds College of Music) are passionate and enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge of musical performance, and have delivered workshops to local high schools on skills such as improvisation, soloing, and how to overcome stage nerves, finishing off with a collaborative evening concert involving all the participating students.
