Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

I have performed at at festivals and various other large scale events, but the biggest was probably at the O2 Arena as backing vocalist for Laville, supporting John Legend.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

I absolutely love Chaka Khan, she always springs to mind first. But I've been influenced by many genres and artists - to name a few: soulful/gospel house, UK garage, '90s and early 2000s R&B and neo soul like Musiq Soulchild or Dru Hill, but I love the weirdos like The Prodigy and Bjork too. Just take a look through my repertoire to see exactly who I mean, I NEVER perform songs I do not like!

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I found our first guitarist in 2011, turned my humble little duo into an acoustic band a year later, (also listed on LMM - search for Diamonds & Pearls!)
It has blossomed into an awesome collective of my favourite London players. We've played countless weddings - and still love doing them - bars, hotels, private events in all sorts of venues - you name it, we've done it.

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

Personally, I don't have a favourite. I know that sounds like a cop-out but as long as I know people are enjoying what they're hearing, I'm happy. Whether that means a smile and a thumbs up at the pub, a little shoulder movement while you're eating at a restaurant, or full on dance battle at a wedding, it all counts!

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

- maximum 30 min set up time for solo performance
- maximum 30 min pack down
- £30 per hour per musician waiting time
- overnight bookings require 50% of rate for additional days spent
- performance time to be used within 3 hour window

Are you happy to perform outside?

Yes - on flat, smooth surface and with shelter if necessary (potential rain or extreme heat) and with sufficient power.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

I will always send my repertoire to my client, ask that they highlight any 'loves', any 'avoids' and then leave the rest to me. I will always pick crowd favourites, my favourites, and always the right tune for the moment. I never have a *set in stone* set list, every client and every gig is different.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

A comment I get very often is "I thought it was the original tune playing, I had no idea there was a live singer until I saw you!" I absolutely have to take this as a compliment because it's definitely not my style to over-sing, and I always perform each song in its original key - male vocalist or female!

But overall it's our song choices that get the most compliments which I'm very proud about. I've always been a bit picky with the songs I play because I believe you need to love what you're singing, represent yourself authentically, and anyway the covers world needs to bring back a bit of taste and ditch the cheese as there's already far too much of it!
