About / Biography

Ska Train’s set-list is a blend of all your favourite 2-Tone classics (Madness, The Specials, Bad Manners, The Beat, The Selecter, etc) and original Jamaican ska tunes, peppered with a few curve-ball song choices to delight audiences of any age and musical interest. Also, if you request it along with your booking, the band can perform a special ska-d up version of any song you like -a first dance, a couple's tune, a go-to party song, or just your all-time favourite!

Ska Train originally made their live debut playing a full set at the iconic 2-Tone Village in Coventry (the home of 2-Tone), and have gone on to play parties, festivals, and sold-out shows across the Midlands. In March '24 they performed a one-off show with very special guest trumpeter Jon Read (ex-Specials).

The band consists of seven highly experienced musical professionals who have played and performed for years at venues across the UK and overseas. They are united by a love of ska music and a passion for sharing this musical love with live audiences everywhere. The line-up features keys, guitar, bass, drums, and vocals, and has an awesome 2-piece horn section with sax and trombone. They love plenty of crowd interaction, and often leave the stage to join the dancefloor while they are playing!

The band is ready to travel anywhere to entertain people. They have a full kit, PA, lighting rig and insurance. They can provide background music during breaks, and/or a Ska DJ to open or follow their live set.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

In March 2024 we played one of our regular sold-out gigs at the award-winning Temperance Music Bar in Leamington Spa, and were accompanied on-stage for the whole set by ex-Specials trumpeter Jon Read.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

Everyone from Desmond Dekker and Prince Buster through to 2-Tone greats like Jerry Dammers

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

The various band members have many decades of experience between them, and have respectively played across a multitude of genres from big band orchestras to garage punk! But all roads lead to ska, and all of us have finally found our spiritual home at Ska \train!

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

It doesn't really matter - any event can be made better with ska music, it's just impossible to stand still!

Do you do requests?

Yes! You can request any song at all at the time of your booking, and we will learn it and deliver a special skanked-up version of it just for you!

Are you flexible on set times?

Of course! The prices quoted here give you an idea of what we can offer, but we can vary the timings and arrangements around to fit in with whatever your requirements are on the day!

Do you have any female band members?

Yes! Our fabulous horn section includes the First Lady of the Skabone, Nik McKiernan!

Do you do much audience participation?

Of course! This music is made to share! These songs are great to get everyone singing and clapping along as they dance, and some of the band - especially the singer and the saxophonist - love to wander around the dance floor as they perform. And if anyone wants their spot on the mic - however good (or not!) they are, just let us know!

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

Most popular booking includes a 2 hour set-up, 2 x 60 minute sets with a 20-30 minute break in between, and a 30 minute get-out.

Are you happy to perform outside?

Of course!

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

We choose the set list to match the event or occasion, however the client can request ANY song at the time of booking and we will perform a ska-d up version of it especially for them!

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Most commonly received comments are about our high-energy performance, along with the great song selection and professional standard of our work.

Can we book you for a short slot at a festival or similar event, where the backline is provided?

Of course, if we just need to plug in and play when we arrive then this is much quicker and easier for us and our fee will reflect that.

Can you provide background or Spotify music when you are not on stage?

Yes, we can supply suitable background music while we set up, during our break, and for a short time after we finish. We can also supply a full ska DJ set either before or after our live set for up to 2 hours.
