About / Biography

One deftly skilled saxophonist in classic vintage uniform performing acoustic mellow saxophone to backing tracks. Jazz standards. Cool Ambient soundscapes. 44 years of professional experience. Outdoor work is a specialty. With my battery powered p.a. I am free from mains electricity and can reach the venues other musicians cannot reach. I aim for sound quality at a volume that is not too loud. Mellow dinner jazz or ambient sounds for acoustically sensitive venues. 3x45 mins or equivalent timings to suit your event.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

I have performed at The Royal Albert Hall for a JK Rowling book launch. I have performed at the Oxford Street Christmas Lights switch-on. I have performed at The Dublin International Tall Ships Festival. In my 36-year professional career, I have performed at venues from Dundee to St Helier, St Just to Lowestoft.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

Stephane Grapelli is my greatest musical influence, I had a record by him with the Hot Club of France, I violinist, but my greatest influence, I set out to learn all his solos and learned the saxophone by listening to his violin playing.
Is there a greatest song of all time? My tastes change with my moods. If I had to choose... Clare De Lune by Debussy.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I started my musical career by singing in a church choir, I am also classically trained on cello. My father is a church organist and my mother is a violin and piano teacher so music has always been around me.
Playing concerts has always been a part of my life. I played my first concert at nine years old when I played with The Suffolk Schools Orchestra in front of Queen Elizabeth at Ipswich Town Hall. It was a stressful first gig!
I ran my own national touring theatre band for 36 years and we did a lot of shows and appeared on TV backing some famous artists. My solo career is a relatively new venture developed because I am working with some extremely good musicians but they are rarely available! And so I decided to explore what might be possible as a solo performer, which so far I am finding enjoyable and liberating.

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

I don't really have a favourite. This is my job and if I take on a booking then every job is of equal importance to me. I feel grateful for the work, playing saxophone for a living is an amazing thing, no matter what the event.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

2 hours to set up (I can set in 30mins if necessary but I like to arrive at events early to cover all possible occurrences).
Show times are up to 3 x 45 mins or 4x33 mins or equivalent timings over the course of the day. Typically clients book me for 2x45s or one right through session in the case of drinks and canapes at a wedding reception. I wish to offer good value by remaining flexible with performance times.

Are you happy to perform outside?

Yes. I ask only that in the case of inclement weather, it is the responsibility of the booker to provide an alternative wet-weather venue and the full fee is still payable. My saxophone can be easily wrecked even by light drizzle!

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

I will take requests if I know them but unfortunately, unlike booking a real live musician to accompany me I am rather limited to my backing tracks.
