About / Biography

Formed in 2020, Rose Cafe are Sharon and Tim, both seasoned performers who join together to create their take on acoustic Gypsy music from Europe and around the world. Using violin and guitar, but also including clarinet, viola and tenor banjo, they encompass styles such as French, Irish, Klezmer, Greek, classical, Bulgarian, Hungarian, Russian, tangos and bossas, plus popular tunes from the classical repertoire and elsewhere.

Sharon and Tim have spent years researching their chosen musical passions and delight in conveying their enthusiasm to their audience. They can adapt their performance to many situations, from a purely acoustic and walkabout act, to static amplified, either using battery amps (no need for mains) or mains-powered amplification or PA. They strive to do their best to provide the client with suitable and uplifting entertainment, including going the extra mile with logistics, timing changes and other special requirements. They will even learn songs/tunes on request and by agreement for that extra personal touch.

Lineups:

  • Duo - Violin and Guitar/Clarinet (alternating)
An extra Guitar, Percussion or Double Bass can be added. Please enquire for availability and prices.

Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

Mains power if not using battery amps. Performance area protected from weather. A single parking space.

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

We have battery amps or a small PA as required.

What information do you require about a venue?

Address, venue capacity, weather dependency, power supply, parking and access, contact details.

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

We can provide certain recorded music options if discussed beforehand.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

Hard to say... :-) We did a great wedding outside in a field in Devon in glorious weather. Hard to beat....

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

Too many to mention but I'm a big fan of the top Gypsy Jazz guitarists.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

As an act, we got together in 2020 right before lockdown. We had several months of learning tunes and building a band. Our first performances were busking.

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

Actually, I love the variety that music provides, from busking a rainy and windswept high street to big stage festival gigs, via weddings, parties, pubs and many other kinds of gig.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

Arrival: 1 to 2 hours before the performance depending on nature of the event but can do quickly if needed/possible.
Set up / pack down: 20 - 40 minutes

We usually perform 2 x 45-60 minute sets but can be highly flexible. We have done 3 hours straight as we have around 8 hours of material.

Are you happy to perform outside?

Yes. We do a lot of outside performance. We can't actually have the instruments getting wet and high winds can be problematic but we have done gigs where most other acts would have cancelled. It's a matter of pride...

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

We welcome input from the client regarding the event programme. We'll usually outline the styles we play but can provide a set list to choose from if it helps. We can also learn some repertoire if agreed in advance - a favourite tune perhaps.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Versatile is probably the top observation, as we can play a classical piece, followed by American old-time, then klezmer etc.
