Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, and a life to everything. It is the essence of order, and leads to all that is good, just and beautiful, of which it is the invisible, but nevertheless dazzling, passionate, and eternal form.
Pneuma is a contemporary and versatile soul, funk and R&B band, creating dazzling live entertainment for venues, festivals, weddings, parties, private and corporate events and special occasions around the UK.
Pneuma brings together a group of musicians from all over the UK. Its members are all top notch musicians who have played with some of the UK's top artists across the jazz and funk circuits appearing nationally and internationally and touring venues, festivals, theatres, hotels and cruise liners around the world.
Pneuma is an ancient Latin word meaning "soul", "spectre", "spirit".
A band delving deep into the Great American musical subconscious, Pneuma brings out the best of soul, funk, rhythm and blues.
Its nine-piece lineup (lead vocals, backing vocals, piano, bass, drums, percussion, saxophones, flute and trumpet) lends itself to a slick, sophisticated sound coloured by the unique concept of soul that arose out of the African experience in America.
A transmutation of gospel, rhythm and blues into a funky testament now widespread throughout the modern world. Combining sultry layered vocals, jazz-tinged harmonies and danceable polyrhythms.
Drawing on their collective experiences of groove, harmony and lyricism, their mission is to celebrate the myriad of styles that arose out of the jazz, blues and gospel traditions which have become significant musical movements from the early twentieth century right through to the present day.
Pneuma is a universal word. It's all about music as a fundamentally human form of expression, and the power of music being able to reach out and touch people on a personal level. A person's soul can be their essence, that part of their being that can soar to the stratosphere. Pneuma’s sound pulls from the grass roots of blues and gospel, the musical manifestations of that essence, galvanises itself in the mettles of jazz and funk and sings from its guts, echoing a cry of euphoria that is felt the world over.

We provide our own PA/sound courtesy of Tiger Music (who have inherited our Yamaha 16-channel desk and 2 speakers), or we book another musician who provides PA as part of the lineup. However, since we are musicians and not trained sound engineers, we always encourage clients and promoters to organise PA where possible. Most large corporate events and festivals we've played at already do this and it helps having the technical expertise on board to ensure that the event is a resounding success!
As much as possible! During show advancing, we will liaise with the clients and work on a document where all contact details and timings are listed ensuring everyone is on the same page and smooth arrangements are guaranteed. As standard, we also arrive 3 hours before performance start time, which allows 2 hours for arrival/setup/soundcheck and 1 optional hour for curfew (point at which the band is set up ready with background music on). Any details that the clients can provide will be added to that document and relayed internally to the musicians well-ahead of the date.
Yes, we include bespoke soul, funk and RnB DJ mixes during the pre/post-performance curfews and between sets. Since Rory (bandleader) has years of DJ'ing under his belt for weddings, private and corporate events, he has a wide catalogue of music, and is constantly updating his mixes to suit the latest and current trends. This service is provided without any extra charge, since it is something we are passionate about and love to share, and it adds to the overall experience! That way, the clients can dance all night long.
PizzaExpress Holborn with Burgandy Williams from the X-Factor, which was sold out.
Our band takes inspiration from all the old-school soul divas, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Anita Baker, Pattie Labelle, Mica Paris, Candi Staton, Chaka Khan, Diana Ross, plus contemporary/80s/90s RnB such as India Arie, Jocelyn Brown, Des'Ree and funk outfits such as Incognito, Earth Wind & Fire, and the Brand New Heavies. Greatest song of all time? Difficult to choose, but Stevie Wonder's As (I'll Be Loving You) as covered by Mary J. Blige captures the essence of Pneuma's sound.
The band emerged out of a residency at Vauxhall's Tea House Theatre, where a group of musicians came together and formed a house band, covering songs by Robert Glasper, Erykah Badu, Omar and Stevie Wonder, just to name a few. The monthly night, founded by Pneuma's bandleader Rory in 2012, and run by its bassist, Mark, featured a different vocalist each month- often attracting special guests from London's jazz and soul/funk scenes.
Any glittery, glamorous corporate function or gala ball, where people who love music are out for a special and memorable night.

Yes! Look no further than Rory (saxophonist and pianist) available as a 1-4 piece lineup (purely instrumental): jazz quartet, jazz trio, jazz duo (sax/piano) or solo sax and backing tracks. Particularly check out the Soul playlist available on the Rory page of Last Minute Musicians, and also request sample set lists from recent weddings and private/corporate events where Rory has delivered funky disco mixes, which are fully documented and can be provided on request.
Lead Time:
We allocate 3 hours Lead Time which includes 2 hours for Arrive, Setup, Soundcheck and an optional 1 hour Curfew (time at which the band/stage is set up and salsa music is playing).
Live Time:
We perform for a maximum of 120 minutes split over a maximum performance window of 3 hours.
Yes, but only if rain cover is provided, due to the unpredictability of the UK weather. We also ask for a flat level surface and a power supply close to the performance area.
As well as sharing our set list, we love bouncing ideas off with our clients, and we especially love it when clients request special songs or genres in advance. Soul music is HUGE and our set list can vary from everything with more of an RnB/HipHop influence to classic ballads or an instrumental funk-fusion set (think Jamiroquai, James Brown and Tower of Power). We are happy to discuss musical requests with clients pre-contract, and also during the show advance (lead-up), but generally the further in advance, the easiest it is to accommodate!
"Thanks again for a fantastic show yesterday. Outstanding performance! Really loved the synergy with Burgandy... Special thanks to all who came out to see Pneuma light up the stage in London performing an incredible show at PizzaExpress Live that thrilled everyone so much that the guests did not want it to end! One of London's best bands." Soul Crystal / Pneuma PizzaExpress Live Holborn. "an energetic and truly outstanding band who created a lively atmosphere at our corporate event."
