About / Biography

DOING MUSIC & GETTING TECHNICAL

Hello, my name is Karen and I am a musician myself.

With so many boxes to tick for gigging musicians I decided to take the PAT testing of my equipment into my own hands for convenience. I started by testing my own complete PA system and lighting, then went on to test the electrical equipment of all band members I work with. My experience and enquiries naturally started growing from there and I found myself filling a gap in the market and offering this service to all music and event professionals.

HOW IT WORKS

PAT stands for Portable Appliance Testing. It is the process of checking electrical appliances for safety through a series of visual inspections and electronic tests. Musicians and DJs can sometimes be specifically asked by a venue to provide proof of PAT testing to confirm that their equipment is safe to use onsite and is not an electrical risk.

Equipment that requires testing consists of anything that connects directly to mains power. This includes:

  • The appliance itself, such as a keyboard or amp.
  • The lead used to plug the appliance in if stored separately, such as a kettle lead.
  • Any extension power leads.

The test involves:

  • A visual examination by myself of the appliance, the lead and the plug. This is part of the test but is also necessary to confirm what Class the appliance falls under.
  • The equipment is then connected to the PAT tester which runs the required electrical tests and provides the results figures as a PASS or FAIL.

As the PAT tester I record all results on your personal record sheet which you get a copy of and which acts as your certificate of testing.

**The PAT test is valid for 1 year after which the equipment will need to be retested. This is standard practise.**

Please note it is your responsibility to maintain the safety of your equipment should any faults or damages occur within this year and organise a retest before annual renewal if necessary.

PASS - All equipment that passes the test will be issued with a PASS sticker.
FAIL - All equipment that fails the test will be issued with a FAIL sticker and recorded as not safe to use until it has been repaired.

**Please note I am not an electrical engineer and do not carry out any repairs but I can relay feedback to help rectify any faults where possible.**
