About / Biography

Lorne MacDougall is one of the world’s leading contemporary pipers, renowned for his mastery of the bagpipes and whistle. He holds an Honours Degree in Scottish Music from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

His career highlights include contributions to major film and television productions such as Disney Pixar's Brave, DreamWorks' How to Train Your Dragon series, and acclaimed shows like Doctor Who, Good Omens, and Thunderbirds Are Go. He served as the bagpipe advisor and recording artist for the final episode of The Crown, where he also portrayed The Piper to the Sovereign in an earlier episode. His piping and arrangements feature in Good Omens(Amazon Prime), The Sea Beast (Netflix), Silent Witness (BBC One), BBC Scotland’s Still Game, and the Christmas special of BBC’s Call the Midwife. He can also be heard as a bagpiping smart gnome in Wallace and Gromit - Vengeance Most Fowl and performed as a mass bagpiper for Hans Zimmer’s Dune soundtrack.

He led the bagpipe section in recording Geoff Zanelli’s score for Squadron 42, a highly anticipated space adventure game set for release in 2026.

MacDougall’s collaborations extend to esteemed artists such as Billy Connolly, BA Robertson, Dougie MacLean, and Susan Boyle. He has represented Scotland in Disney’s It's a Small World and contributed to D Imman’s soundtrack for the Tamil film Bogan. He is also a member of the bagpipe supergroup Tryst and tours with his own bagpipe-centric folk band, bringing his unique blend of traditional Scottish music and contemporary influences to audiences worldwide.

Originally from Carradale in Kintyre and now based in Glasgow, his career spans from touring with the legendary Tannahill Weavers—veterans of nearly 60 years in Scottish folk music—to taking on various roles with modern Bagrock icons, the Red Hot Chilli Pipers.
