Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

Getting the pedal harp into the venue requires nearby parking and good access. The harp trolly can move fairly easily over flat surfaces and gentle slopes. Stairs present more of a challenge, and may require a ramp or assistance from another person. As a rough rule of thumb, if a venue has good disabled access then the pedal harp should be fine. The alternative celtic harp is smaller and more portable and can be used on occasion for venues with trickier access.

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

The harp is acoustic and does not usually need amplification.

What information do you require about a venue?

See "basic technical requirements" above.

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

No, but my breaks do not tend to be long, so this is not an issue.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

What a difficult question! I think it would have to be performances of Nausicaa with incidental music by Robin Holloway, which took place in beautiful settings in Italy. Nearer to home, playing for weddings in beautiful venues such as Polhawn Fort or Pendennis Castle have also been pretty special.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

Another really hard question. At one time I might answer JS Bach, at another the Beatles. My repertoire is very broad and increasing with every request, and my aim is always to make whichever piece I am playing sound like the greatest of all time.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I have been playing the harp at weddings since I was a kid, and after university (over a decade ago) I took up doing it full time have been doing so full time.

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

Probably weddings, because they are such joyous occasions!

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

Set up takes about an hour before the performance.
Typical performance times range from one hour to two and a half hours, but I am open to many different timing options.

Are you happy to perform outside?

The harp can play outside, provided the weather is dry and calm. Wet earth or rainy weather may damage the harp, and too much wind will make it unstable. If playing outside for an extended time in the glorious sunshine, the harp and harpist will need shade!

The harp also needs a surface where it can stand without falling over, so the ground needs to be reasonably flat.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

Yes, clients definitely have a say! i am happy to discuss any requests they may have. Not every piece is suitable for the harp, but it is a very adaptable instrument, so I do not often have to say no. I am willing to learn up to three new pieces for a ceremony. Clients are also welcome to look through my repertoire list, or ask for advice.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Previous clients often use words like "beautiful" or "magical" to describe my performance. The general consensus seems to be that the harp really helps to make the atmosphere perfect.
