An experienced musician offering Bagpipes and Harp, I've been playing for events for over 30 years.
Beyond the beautiful music of the harp, I bring a personal touch to your event. My goal is to create an atmosphere filled with warmth and joy, leaving a lasting memory for you and your guests. Let's work together to make your event a truly unique and unforgettable experience.
Based in Bourne End, Buckinghamshire
I play an extensive range of tunes on both
instruments and have playlists that can
cater for events such as weddings, funerals,
birthdays, corporate events, Burns nights
and Celtic evenings.
HARP: Classical, popular, celtic, eg
Canon in D, Jesu Joy,
Perfect, Skye Boat
BAGPIPES: Traditional, popular eg
Scotland the Brave,
Rowan Tree,
The Rose,
Can you Feel the Love
For the bagpipes there are no real requirements as I play standing up and am mobile so can walk around. The bagpipes don't need any electrical requirements. I can transport my bagpipes by train, so parking is not necessary.
For the harp the performance space is 3ft x 3ft. I do have an amp and when I use that I simply need 1 power socket within 2m of the performance space. I require 1 parking space near the venue. I require 1 chair at the venue for sitting at my harp.
I provide an amp for the harp
I like to know the name of the wedding events manager at the venue or the funeral director if a funeral. Discussions with these people help to make sure that my performance seamlessly fits in with the plans for the day.
I don't yet provide music between sets.
One of the most unusual gigs that I did on the bagpipes was as a zombie bagpiper on the Heropanti 2 Bollywood blockbuster. I spent a week at Blenheim palace dressed in my kilt uniform, made up to look like I'd risen from the dead!
I've not played anywhere so unusual with the harp (yet). Aside from playing at weddings, my most treasured moments are playing harp in my local church for a hymn service.
That's a difficult question. I've written a whole book on Scottish music where I take the reader through an entire year, 366 pieces composed by a Scot. It covers all genres like jazz, punk, opera, computer games music. So there is so much to choose from. I do really like Eddie Reader and her version of Ae Fond Kiss - I always start my harp gigs with that. But I also like Runrig and Biffy Clyro - not that I play them on either harp or bagpipes. On the bagpipes 78th Fraser Highlanders are amazing
I've been playing instruments all my life. First performance was at 7 on classical guitar at School. Then at 11 with grade 5 clarinet I was given a place in the junior training orchestra for the New Zealand Symphony. At 18 I took up bagpipes and paraded with my band in the Auckland Parmers market and Eden Rugby openers etc. In my 30s I took up jazz and went to the course that Cleo Lane and Johnny Dankworth set up at Wavendon. Latterly I was taught harp by my step-daughter (harp grad BMus)
I love playing at all events, it has been my lifelong ambition to be a musician at weddings. My career had been in IT, but music was always my passion. Whenever I'd go to a wedding I used to longingly look at the string quartet or pianist and think 'that is what I really want to do'.
I also really enjoy playing at funerals, especially on the bagpipes. I really like being part of that day of celebrating a life and feel that I genuinely give a service that pays a fitting tribute to the loved one.
I always arrive 1 hour before I am to perform. This is so the event manager/client/funeral director knows for certain that I am there and it is one less thing for them to be concerned about.
On bagpipes I usually play for up to 1 hour. Normally 2 - 3 x 15min slots
On harp I play in 45 min sets. At a baseline I play 2x45 min sets but I can play up to 4 sets
When I play bagpipes and harp then it is a combination of the above. Normally it starts with bagpipes (eg guest arrival for 30 - 40 min). Then I transition to the harp for the ceremony (processional, signing, recessional)
Yes.
Bagpipes I can find appropriate shelter if the weather is a bit rough. I'm also happy to march, eg process bride to the chapel or parade hearse to the crematorium door.
Harp I ask for rain cover if light rain is expected, eg a gazebo. If it is strong rain then I need to play inside to protect the harp.
Yes I take requests. I can learn new bagpipe tunes fairly quickly, within days, although I do need to check it is possible as the pipes only have 9 notes.
On the harp I ask for at least 1 month to learn a new tunes and I ask to limit this to 1 - 2 new tunes.
Professional. I do everything I can to work with you and provide the performance you need for your event.
No client has ever described my integrity/honesty because its not something they are necessarily aware of, but it is something that I pride myself on. If I take a gig and another comes along, I always stick with the commitment already made. For example I turned down the opportunity to be on TV's The Repair Shop because I was already booked for a wedding.
