Johanna the Jazz Violinist trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London on jazz violin, Johanna has formed her own unique approach to the violin which has so far led to a wide array of different performances. She even performed for The Duke of Edinburgh on a very special silk violin at the Imperial College in London.
Originally from Berlin and trained classically for 16 years before transitioning to jazz training, she brings her love of jazz and techno together in her own compositions/arrangements and improvisation. Johanna has appeared on many jazz records in the recent years such as “There Is A Place” by Maisha and "Rosie’s 5ive” which are both a product of the blooming London jazz scene. Her classical foundation fermented at Wells Cathedral School in Somerset combined with the jazz training from the Guildhall School allows Johanna to be a very versatile player in regards of genre as she has brilliant reading skills which are combined with the ability to transcribe songs and chords by ear and learn/arrange them in a unique approach.
The jazz training also provides a good knowledge of electronics and other instruments in general which allowed her to form a solo act that has been very popular at weddings, hotel events and bars. Combining effects, a loop pedal, violin and voice plus the occasional synthesizer provides a very well-rounded sound which is still quite unique due to the fact that it is created by a violin mostly. Johanna also performs as a duo with either singer, bass or piano and trio/quartet depending on the performance with bass, keys and drums.
Notable past performance venues include Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, British Embassy in Guangzhou - China, Glastonbury Festival Truth Stage, La Seine Musicale in Paris, Love Supreme Festival, Love Box Festival and various concert halls during a tour with a German chamber orchestra through Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia and Italy.
"The first jazz violin undergraduate at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the rare violinist in London’s renowned contemporary jazz scene, Frankfurt-born Johanna takes an unusual approach to her instrument, one also inspired by the club scene from her time living in Berlin. Her 2020 debut, Johanna, soothes and scratches; cavernous bass, piercing sharpness and slurred vocals subvert any linear sense. She feels primed for a breakout similar to Anna Meredith or Oliver Coates." /The Guardian/

Power, microphone stand, stool for the amplifier to be at hearing level, secure room to leave equipment, bags and personal items during the performance.
Meals need to be provided or bought if the client requires me/us to be at the venue for longer and during normal meal times. For example, if Johanna's required play at a wedding for the reception and speeches at 12pm for 2x45 minutes there needs to be water and snacks provided in the break. If it’s a dinner gig from 7-9pm there needs to be a meal break in between if the client requires me to be at the venue a few hours before already which is usually the case, especially if there is travel involved.
I can provide an amp but I don't provide lighting and PA.
I need to know about plugs available and positioning of the stage and PA ideally!
"Yes, I'm happy to play music from Spotify before, after and between our sets. I'm happy to choose the music or let the client choose the music."
Between 20-35 minutes to set up. If it’s with full band - 45 minutes.
Cut off time is midnight (unless it's a festival).
The violin unfortunately is not ideal for playing outside so generally I can't, unless it's a covered stage and it's not raining. Winter temperatures can damage the instrument so the weather has to be right if I'm needed for an outside performance.
Clients can choose music they would like me to perform but if this adds a lot of preperation time for me I will need to reflect that in my fee!
Previous clients would describe me as eye-catching, unusual, atmospheric and enchanting.
