About / Biography

The unique sight and sound of the harp will instantly add a touch of class and sophistication to any event. Its gentle, dulcet tones create a heavenly and sparkling atmosphere, perfect for weddings, parties, proposals and more! Make your event stand out above the rest by including harp music as your entertainment.

"With many years of performance experience, I have a wide variety of repertoire that will provide something for everyone to enjoy. Whilst I am classically trained, I can perform the music of many different genres, including pop, jazz, contemporary, folk, religious and traditional. You can find an extensive list of my repertoire further down the page. If you have any song requests – a special song for your bridal entry for example – or if there is a song you would like that isn’t in my repertoire list, I am more than happy to arrange it for harp just for you! Be sure to mention this in your enquiry."

Award winning harpist, Jess Hughes graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music with a First Class ‘Bachelor of Music with Honours’ degree in 2022. Her first year of undergrad was generously supported by the ‘Waverly Fund’, and her Masters year funded by the ‘Jellis Bequest’. Prior to her higher education, Jess was awarded a scholarship to attend Wells Cathedral School, where she studied harp with Ruth Faber.

Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

A parking space as close to the venue entrance as possible.

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

n/a

What information do you require about a venue?

I will need to know where the accessible entrances are and if there are any steps to negotiate.

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

No, but this is something that I can liase with the venue.

Can you easily move your harp around the venue?

Despite its size, it is quick and easy to move the harp around a venue, as it comes with its own specialised harp trolley. Stairs can be negotiated but please let me know beforehand if there are narrow or spiral staircases in the venue. Also, please let me know if your reception is in a separate venue to the wedding ceremony.

How big is the harp?

The harp is about 2 metres tall and 1 metre wide. I will require a space approximately 2.5m² in which to perform.

Can you perform outside?

I can also play the harp outdoors but it has to be protected from the weather. Essentially, it requires shade on a sunny day and I can’t play outside if there’s any chance of rain. The harp also needs to be located on a solid, level surface, which can’t be bare earth or grass. Patios, terraces and decking are best.

Do you have Public Liability Insurance?

Yes. I have insurance provided through my membership to the Musicians’ Union and I am insured to the sum of £10 million.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

I've been so lucky to perform at many different gigs, and some beautiful venues, but my favourite has to be a solo recital at Christmastime in the Bath Pump Rooms, for a concert organised by former Kings Singer, Nigel Perrin. It was such a sparkling atmosphere!

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

Other professional harpists, including Catrin Finch, Yolanda Kondonassis, Emmanuel Ceysson and Eira Lynn Jones to name a few! My favourite music to play on the harp is Romantic/Impressionist French music, but my favourite song cover to play is 'Photograph' by Ed Sheeran.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I've been gigging full-time for just over a year, but over my 14 years as a harpist I have performed at hundreds of weddings, corporate events, recitals, festivals and more.

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

My favourite type of event would be either a solo recital, or a wedding ceremony, where everyone there is present , can take in what's happening around them, and can listen to the beautiful sound of the harp.

What do you usually play?

I play around 20 songs in an hour. I am happy for you to provide me with a list of songs that you would like me to play. Alternatively, you can just tell me the kind of music you like and I can take it from there. You can also simply ask me to use my own judgement on the day and play music that I think everyone will enjoy.

What are your travel arrangements?

I will travel throughout the UK but I may ask for overnight accommodation to be provided if your wedding is a considerable distance from where I live (in Manchester). I will also need a parking space close to the venue, (big enough for an estate car), as the harp is a relatively large instrument. Travel expenses are calculated in addition to my fees and will be included in any final quote.

Do you ever perform with other musicians?

Yes – I often play with other musicians including saxophone, flute, trumpet, violin, cello and voice. Please let me know if you are interested in any of these options.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

I normally play 2 x 45 minute sets with a break in between. I will always arrive to the venue at least an hour before the event to give me plenty of time to set up and tune.

Are you happy to perform outside?

I am happy to perform outside as long as I am undercover in wet weather, in the shade in hot weather, and on a flat surface like patio or decking, NOT grass.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

I can learn specific songs before the event but I usually limit this to 5 songs. The clients are welcome to pick a set list from my repertoire or let me choose the music for them

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Previous customers would describe my music as beautiful, magical and elegant.

What's the sound quality of 'live' harp like?

The harp sounds beautiful in any wedding venue but will sound its best in spacious rooms with hard surfaces. The sound of the harp can carry outdoors but will always sound louder indoors. It is possible to amplify the harp but as a carefully crafted, acoustic instrument it will produce the most beautiful sound when played without amplification. As an instrument that can be heard in a large concert hall it can be heard perfectly well during a busy reception, as well as providing the more ‘softly spoken’ moments that accompany the ceremony itself.
