About / Biography

I am a trained and experienced solo pianist/keyboardist with a versatile range of mainstream covers drawn from pop, indie, rock, blues, soul and classical. Garden parties, functions, restaurants/bars, birthdays etc can also be quoted for; please send me a message with your requirements.

More uniquely, I am a music postgraduate also experienced in arranging any piece for any combination of instruments or band to your requirements. One booking requested an orchestra + band version of Nina Simone's Feelin' Good. (nearly as big as Bublé, but not quite...) This arrangement also had to be easy to play for school age children. Please also see the review for this wedding.

Are you looking for:

A performer of mellow ambient background music for your event, conference, or exhibition?

Maybe you'd like something more upbeat and involving for your wedding?

Or have you already sorted a band, but just need an arranger/MD?

I can meet all of the above. I have performed at many weddings in a diverse range of locations, and I am the official pianist at Grittenham Barn in West Sussex; there are some special rates available. Please contact me for further details of those. In fact, please contact me anyway, for a friendly informal chat about any aspect of your wedding or event - whether you have any questions, special requests, or dress codes!

Standard repertoire is listed below. If you would like a song or piece that isn't in the list, please let me know and I'll do the rest. Please note this will incur an extra fee, which covers sourcing the sheet music and preparation time. I can also be hired as an accompanist.

Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

Most or all of the following would be ideal: 1 car parking space or loading bay, 2 power sockets and a clear performance area of 3m x 2m for a full length piano and PA.

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

Yes, I'll bring a PA system.

What information do you require about a venue?

I'll need the exact location, any load in/out requirements (although a nearby parking space would be helpful), any curfew times, and any volume limits.

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

Yes, happy to. Please supply any desired playlists in advance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

Nick and Wendy's wedding at the penthouse suite at The Dorchester was exceptional, as a venue.

But the best gig was probably David's wedding. Aside from providing background music during the wedding breakfast, I had to prepare, orchestrate and rehearse a version of Feelin' Good for around 20 musicians, some of whom were relatively inexperienced, so the arrangement had to be easy to learn. On the day itself, I effectively had to be an MD as well! Hearing the final performance of it was worth every second of the preparation, though, and it gave me renewed belief in my abilities to really deliver a customised request.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

I was raised on a staple diet of Queen, Elton John and the musicals of Andrew Lloyd Webber. My mum was pregnant with me when my parents went to a Queen concert, maybe that's where my love for Queen comes from! It took me far too long to discover Billy Joel, who is now probably my favourite artist. If I ever need to inject some energy into a performance, anything by Abba is always guaranteed to get the ladies in the crowd going! The greatest song of all time has got to be something that is timeless, that tells a story, and can totally transport you to another place. For me, it would probably either be New York State of Mind by Billy Joel or Someone Saved My Life Tonight by Elton John.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I picked up a keyboard at age 3, and started lessons at age 8 up until my later teenage years, sitting the usual ABRSM exams. When I was 18 and at university in Leeds, I volunteered with the Bridge the Gap. My role was to play 3 hours of music a week in the local Burley Oaks Care Home. This taught me how to rotate repertoire and engage an audience. When I moved back home to do my postgrad degree, I formed and led student bands, playing friends weddings and local gigs. Sadly, those bands stopped as others wanted to do different things; I kept going solo.

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

I love playing weddings. It's always an honour and a privilege to be chosen to perform on the biggest day of someone's life, and I never forget that. I make sure I prepare thoroughly, and throw everything into my performance.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

Setup time is normally 30-60 minutes, dependent on car parking proximity to the venue.

The most common performance times are 2 x 45 minutes or 2 x 60 minutes.

Are you happy to perform outside?

Yes, assuming there is shade or a suitable marquee, a flat surface, and an external power supply less than 40 metres from the performance area.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

Standard repertoire is included in the quoted price. Requests are chargeable - please allow sufficient time for me to prepare these. All Spotify playlist streaming before and after the performance and during intervals are FOC.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Previous clients have described my performances as sophisticated and refined, but also more than capable of kicking up a gear or three to get people dancing!
