About / Biography

Based in London, J Keys is a renowned pianist, composer and musical director with a taste for eclecticism and virtuosic flair. He is an experienced music tutor and a qualified expert in the art of professional music performance, analytical study and principles of music composition.

As an established music producer and director today, he leads the music direction for the successful West End established musical, Olivia Twist, along with the dynamic, London-based gospel choir, Insignia (a collective which he co-founded as a teenager in 2003). His compositional work has also been commissioned in the film industry, penning the score for Mistaken [2015], a Peter Martin Films production, along with a number of community based projects that tackle issues such as domestic violence. He has written and produced material for the likes of 2008 'The X Factor' winner Alexandra Burke and MOBO Award winning singer-songwriter Rachel Kerr.

Before delving more into musical theatre and the short film industry, Charles-Nelson toured across Europe and the Caribbean as a pianist/keyboardist within various ensembles such as the prestigious Camden Youth Orchestra and Camden Youth Jazz Band. In this time, he was privileged enough to grace many world renowned venues and events, such as the Royal Albert Hall, the Jazz Cafe, Ronnie Scotts, Leipzig Jazz Festival 2009 in Germany, and Gospelfest 2013 in Barbados, while embarking upon and completing his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music at Brunel University, London.

J Keys possesses the unique ability of perfect pitch, which complements his creative and virtuosic brand of performance and composition, being able to hone in on the subtleties of dynamic variation as well as a pure balance between harmonic consonance and dissonance to create a vivid palette of sonic colours that marry both extremes together with seamlessly. He is an excellent communicator with experience in tutoring and directing students and practitioners of all ages. This is due to the masses of experience gained from teaching via the educational system in schools and directing within the professional performance domain.

Specialties: Professional Music Performance, Instrumental and Theoretical Tuition (for all ages/abilities), Music Direction and Composition, Digital Audio Production (using Logic Pro 9 DAW software), MIDI Programming, Choral Direction and Vocal Training, Cast and Band/Ensemble Leadership.
