I studied piano performance and the oboe at the Royal Academy of Music in London with Piers Lane, Christopher Elton and Sue Böhling. After four years study, I achieved a Professional Performance Certificate with Honours. Since then, I have enjoyed engagements as a solo pianist and instrumentalist as well as accompanying a range of musicians and singers, and being a team player in chamber music ensembles.
Over the past three years I have worked as a "classical act" on cruises booked directly with Fred Olsen. I believe I have developed a rather unique "act" in that I play five instruments: piano, oboe, cor anglais, soprano and tenor saxophones. I have called this act "Ebony, Ivory and a Touch of Bronze". I perform music in a variety of styles, from Winifred Atwell to William Lloyd Webber, Billy Mayerl to Barry Manilow, Ketèlbey to Kern. The variety of genres included in my programmes has been well received by passengers who have even requested that the Entertainment Director on the Braemar, should add an additional performance to the schedule!
I believe my concerts have been well received because I have gained an understanding of how to compile interesting programmes, presenting music that appeals to a wide range of musical tastes. Not everyone, in my performing experience, appreciates Classical music so I have expanded my repertoire to include scores from the largely forgotten Victorian Parlour genre. This includes delightful compositions by composers such as Charles Kinkel, Adolphe Baumbach and Carl Bohm. My programmes also include popular British music such as Albert Ketèlbey's "Bells Across The Meadows" and "In a Monastery Garden" and Billy Mayerl's "Railroad Rhythm". These have proved to be very popular with audiences. Winifred Atwell's Britannia Rag is also a much loved favourite.
Then, of course, there's all the music for the wind instruments which is accompanied by high quality backing tracks: the jazz standards on soprano and tenor saxophones, music from films such as "Dr Zhivago" and "Gabriel's Oboe" from "The Mission", as well as songs from musicals by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Oscar Hammerstein II. In particular, audiences enjoy the haunting, mellow tone of the cor anglais which is an unusual and significant feature in my programmes.
I am very keen to share my concert programmes with a wider audience and look forward to hearing from you in due course.
