BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award Finalist Ciorstaidh grew up as a native Gàidhlig speaker in Kilmuir, on the Isle of Skye. A graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music, she is a professional freelance harpist now based in Scotland where she recently completed a post-graduate at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in joint pedal harp and traditional clàrsach performance.
Ciorstaidh is a versatile player, always involved in a wide range of musical styles. She is a keen orchestral harpist, working regularly with a variety of orchestras and ensembles across the UK. Recent performances include working with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Rogue Orchestra, the Red Note Ensemble, and the orchestra of the Scottish Opera. Her solo playing highlights include performing Marcel Grandjany’s transcription of Handel’s Harp Concerto in Bb as part of a concert in Glasgow with the RCS’ String Orchestra, and giving a solo clàrsach recital at the Edinburgh International Harp Festival as part of their well-attended Tea Concert in 2017.
With her diverse musical background and enthusiasm for creating, Ciorstaidh enjoys working amongst an array of musicians and composers. Since 2015 she regularly played with the Festival No.6 Ensemble, who performed composer Joe Duddell’s crossover collaborations with many different artists such as : JAMES, Rae Morris, Gaz Coombes, Temples, Nadine Shah, Edwine Collins, Mike Garry, Jane Weaver and ShadowParty. Ciorstaidh features on ShadowParty’s self-titled debut album released in 2018 on Mute Records, recorded at 80 Hertz Studios in Manchester. A highlight with the No.6 Ensemble was playing live with Daughter in London as part of the Somerset House concert series. She has played at Celtic Connections on a verity of occasions which include : the BT River of Music project led by Zakir Hussain, Kuljit Bhamra and Donald Shaw, Graham Mackenzie’s New Voices commission 2015 (later recorded as his debut album Crossing Borders at Castle Sound Studios), Phil Cunningham & John Ashton-Thomas’ Highlands and Islands Suite in the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall in 2017 and, most recently, Pàdruig Morrison’s New Voices commission in January 2020.
Ciorstaidh is a passionate and experienced teacher, providing pedal harp, clàrsach and piano lessons privately from home or online. She teaches regularly within some of Scotland's leading musical institutions and music services such as The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and St. Mary's Music School, in both individual lessons and mixed ensemble classes. She is an experienced workshop leader, giving classes with organisations such as The Clàrsach Society, and through the medium of Gàidhlig for Fèis music courses and FèisSgoil (Glasgow). Other highlights include outreach workshops with the RSNO in Glasgow schools, and returning to the RNCM for a harp ensemble and clàrsach duo collaboration commissioned by head of harp Eira Lynn Jones, during the conservatoire’s annual Chamber Music Festival.
Ciorstaidh has extensive experience in providing beautiful music for all occasions. She is available to play for all functions such as: weddings, private or corporate events, businesses, launches, christenings, baby showers and regularly plays for high-end afternoon teas in luxury hotels all over Scotland, as well as intimate and rural countryside locations.
