About / Biography

Professional Celtic harpist and multi-instrumentalist for 36 years.

Traditional Celtic music, also pop music, and some renaissance/medieval music.

Chris specialises particularly in traditional Celtic music including much Irish, Scottish and Welsh music, also some Breton, Manx and Cornish music, but he also plays other styles of music and has a large repertoire of popular romantic tunes, film themes and similar, and a few light classical pieces, which are available as an alternative to the traditional Celtic material, or in addition to it. He can also offer a set of early/medieval/renaissance music.

Chris is available for public performances, recitals, weddings, corporate events etc. throughout the UK; and also for media & recording session work. (Fee varies with travel distance.)

Chris plays a 34-string Camac Ulysse Celtic harp, an excellent instrument with a lovely sound. The Celtic harp is very portable, so can be easily moved between rooms or venues with a minimum of fuss.

ALSO DUO OPTION: For Irish music bookings, Chris can also offer a duo option- he plays Celtic harp and bouzouki in a duo with the excellent uilleann piper/flute/whistle player Ben Walker. As the 'Gold Ring Duo', they specialise in Irish & Celtic music for weddings, corporate events and other occasions. The Gold Ring duo can offer, for example, solo harp for a wedding ceremony, followed by lively jigs & reels by the duo (Ben on uilleann pipes/flute/whistle, and Chris on harp/bouzouki/cittern) at the drinks reception, then more mellow harp & flute music during the wedding breakfast- all from a duo, giving great instrumental variety through the day, for the one duo fee.

Chris supplies his own small unobtrusive but high-quality PA/amplification as necessary, which is P.A.T. certified. For smaller, quieter gatherings he can play acoustically without amplification if required, or for outdoor settings without electricity supply, a small battery-powered amplifier is available.

He has full Public Liability Insurance cover.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

I played privately for H.M Queen Elizabeth II at her visit to Conwy castle. I've also played at 2 Glastonbury festivals, headlined at various folk festivals, and have featured on a number of TV and radio programs for BBC, HTV, S4C, & Radio Scotland.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

Regarding Celtic harp, I like Alan Stivell, Alison Kinnaird, Wendy Stewart, Maire Ni Chathasaigh, Robin Williamson. Otherwise, I have eclectic musical tastes and enjoy a very wide range of music.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I have been a full time professional musician for most of my working life, both live performance and recording, including some session recording for other artists, as well as releasing 22 albums as a main featured musician. I play a number of instruments, in several genres of music, but the Celtic harp is my principal instrument. Other main instruments I use for work are Irish bouzouki, whistle, saxophone, fiddle, and electric mandolin.

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

I enjoy performing at concerts, festivals & recitals, but I'm also happy to play background music at weddings and other events.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

Solo set up time- approx. 20 minutes.
Performance time- normally up to 2 and a half hours max. , with a couple of breaks.

Are you happy to perform outside?

I'm happy to play outside as long as the temperature is 15 degrees C. or above, but I require shade from direct sun onto the harp, and shelter from any rain. I must have level ground for my chair and the harp.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

I'm willing to learn 2 or 3 songs as special requests for weddings etc., as long as they are suitable for the instrument. Clients are welcome to pick favourites from my repertoire, otherwise I will select pieces that I consider suitable and appropriate for the occasion.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Clients frequently describe my music performances as beautiful, magical, and atmospheric.
