I once accompanied singer, Lulu at a charity concert at the Royal Opera House: there were many other well known musicians and actors taking part, including Madonna, Brian Adams, Anoushka Shankar, Jimmy Naill, Vanessa Redgrave, Simon Callow, Angharad Rees etc.
On another occasion I was invited to play alongside the Queen's Piper for a dinner party at Bagshot Park, the home of Prince Edward and Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh. Her Majesty the Queen was one of the guests and we had a chat about piping, which she loved, and about my teaching the instrument.
I am a keen videographer and like to film top pipers like Stuart Liddell, Angus MacColl, Willie McCallum, Gordon Walker and so many others, as well as up-and-coming young players.
I first took lessons on piping at the age of 16 and joined a Territorial Army pipe band, competing at a high level and performing all over the UK, including on TV shows and at the Royal Albert Hall. I later joined British Caledonian Airways Pipe Band, and was sent all over the world to perform on behalf of the airline, various British Embassies and the British Council. I now play with the Surrey Pipe Band.
Because pipe music is so emotional, I enjoy playing both at happy events like weddings, formal dinners, birthdays etc. and sad occasions like funerals, when the music is meaningful and helps folk channel their emotions. I also enjoy playing at village fĂȘtes and carnivals, school visits, care homes etc.
I always arrive at least an hour early to acclimatise the pipes and tune up. I can perform as required, whether it be just one tune or several medleys over a longer period (e.g. as guests arrive for a wedding or formal dinner).
I am often asked to play outside, which I am always happy to do (though preferably not in the freezing cold or rain !)
I usually ask if the client has particular tunes that they would like played. If they can be played on the highland pipes, then I always do my best to please.
Previous clients have described my performances as very emotional, good fun, and professional.
