Richard first learnt to play the bagpipes at the College of Piping in Glasgow. Later he received tuition from Willie McKay, Crieff, P/M Andy Renwick (Vale of Atholl Pipe Band) and is currently receiving tuition from both Dougie McCance (finalist in The Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2017) and Harry Richards, both of whom are full time pipers with the The Red Hot Chilli Pipers.
He was a member of the Gleneagles Strathearn Pipe Band (Grade 3 World Champions) for 8 years and regularly played at The Gleneagles Hotel, Perthshire for both private and corporate events.
Richard is currently Pipe Sergeant of the Wirral Pipe Band which is under the leadership of P/M Chris Eyre and is based at Moreton on the Wirral. The Wirral Pipe Band play at a number of events in the North West, such as The Victorian Extravaganza in Llandudno, weddings at Carden Park, Cheshire, local village fetes and festivals around the North West. Should you require more than a solo piper, additional pipers and drummers can be booked up to a full band for your event.
Richard and The Wirral Pipe Band were invited to play with Andre Rieu on stage in 2017 at the Liverpool Echo Arena and with the Irish folk group ‘The Chieftains’ at Liverpool’s Irish Feis in 2018.
Richard auditioned and was selected to play with the Massed Pipes and Drums at the City of Liverpool Tattoo 2018 and the British International Tattoo Massed Pipes and Drums 2022.
In May 2019, Richard and the Wirral Pipe Band have been invited to play on stage with The Red Hot Chilli Pipers at the Floral Pavilion, Wallasey.
As a soloist, Richard has a busy schedule playing at weddings, funerals, St Andrews and Burns Nights in the North West. He also regularly competes in RSPBA (North West) Branch solo competitions and at the annual P/M Joe Massey Memorial Piping Recital at the Adelphi Hotel, Liverpool.
Richard played with the Massed Pipes and Drums for the British International Tattoo in 2022 and as acting P/M for the Wirral Pipe Band in the massed pipe band march for the 80th D-Day celebrations in 2024.
Richard believes that it's his attention to detail in helping you plan your event (which is reflected in his reviews) that has kept him in demand. He likes to meet his clients if possible to discuss all aspects of what you would like him to do and where appropriate make suggestions to further enhance your event. Richard has both No.1 and No.2 Dress Uniforms befitting any occassion.
