Technical Info

What are your basic technical requirements?

Normally a performance space of 5M x 3m (min), 2 x 13 amp sockets (min), 2 parking spaces. Parking and performance space may vary if more than the two of us are playing.

Do you provide sound and lighting equipment?

We provide our own sound equipment but generally no lighting rig although it is possible if required.

What information do you require about a venue?

Postcode, access times to set up, any restrictions on playing - times e.g. must finish by 11:00pm, presence of sound limiting equipment.

Can you provide a Spotify/DJ service before and between your sets?

We can play interval music from our own equipment that generally suits the occasion or specific music if the hirer lets us know in advance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

Beverley Folk Festival, on the racecourse, midnight Ceilidh.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

Various folk and country singers across the years, bands such as Runrig, Oysterband, Fairport, Lindisfarne, and more recently Sam Kelly, Brothers Osborne and many more.

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

Noel started playing bass and singing at age 16 in cover bands working the clubs circuit in the midlands gradually transforming into a solo guitarist/singer then a mandolin player in local ceilidh bands. Steve (Noel's son) picked up a guitar at age 5 and has never looked back. He plays guitar, bass, flute, whistle, some piano and melodeon but these days largely plays guitar in our 2 piece band. He also makes many of the backing tracks we use for dances and concerts. We used to play as a three piece but Olga sadly passed in 2024 hence now mainly a 2 piece. However, we do play out with a number of very talented musicians from time to time so Alterego may be a 6 piece at times...

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

Festivals, especially festival ceilidhs are our favourite but we also love playing concerts for all events especially St Patrick's Night and Burn's Night for which we are usually booked well in advance as well as ceilidhs for weddings and parties. If unsure what you want, ask and we will happily chat over your requirements to see if we fit.

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

We typically take 30 mins to get set up so arriving 1 hour before the start is normal but some venues, e.g. weddings require different arrival/set up regimes so we are flexible at such events. Ceilidhs would normally be 2 x 45 min sets which is what we find suits most events although they have been known to stretch a little. We can insert songs, adding a few minutes breather if the dancers get too tired. For concerts, we would also do 90 minutes total, typically 3 x 30 min sets - again we can be flexible here.

Are you happy to perform outside?

Yes, we often play outside provided the equipment is sheltered from inclement weather and a safe power supply is available.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

If the client wishes to specify a few songs that we don't already perform, we will do our best to support the request if at all possible - this will need plenty of forward notice. We would say no more than 4 songs within the genre but reserve the right to not do them if time is against us.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

They usually love what they get at ceilidhs, barn dances, concerts, festivals etc. Our aim is to entertain as well as get people up dancing.
