About / Biography

Playing across genres, I whole-heartedly embrace the particular energies of the music I play, whilst retaining my own unique musical signature and character. This is clear in both my solo piano and ensemble arrangements, in which I bring together influences from my eclectic musical background and the rich history of jazz music: from folk, pop, blues and swing, to be-bop, funk and jazz fusion.

I have extensive experience performing at private and corporate functions, weddings and parties. My career as a professional session musician, teacher, and artist puts me in the perfect position to adapt my music to your event's needs, with reliable assurance and commitment to the genre and setting.

Previous venues include: Wales Millenium Centre; Vortex Jazz Club; Battersea Arts Centre; Jazz at The Lescar; St David’s Hall; The Senedd; Cardiff Castle; The Ambassador’s Residence, Paris.

BMus 1st class honours in jazz piano from The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Cardiff.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gig you've ever done and the best venue you've ever played at?

Opening up for Bastille at Depot in the Castle 2023 with Tom Jenkins was a really amazing gig. As well as a trip to Paris to play piano/saxophone duo for the Welsh Ambassador at his residence for St David's Day was quite an honour.

Which artists have you been most influenced by, who is your favourite artist and what is the greatest song of all time?

Oscar Peterson was the first jazz pianist I heard and I was immediately hooked! Influences have broadened since then to include Dua Lipa, Slipknot, Billy Joel, Kraftwerk, Rachmaninov, Debussy, Tom Jones and far, far too many more to mention!

What's your previous experience and how did you start gigging?

I started gigging at about age 16 in local pubs with my sister, in Hertfordshire where we grew up. Since then I've travelled the length and breadth of the UK playing across so many different settings - rock bands, singer-songwriters, modern jazz quartets, orchestras, musicals, solo, duos and more.

What's your favourite type of event to play at?

I love a Christmas party, it has to be said! The music, the singing, the food...!

Performance Info

What are your typical setup and performance times?

I normally arrive an hour before the performance if playing solo, allowing more time for larger bands.
I usually play around 45-50 minutes per set.

Are you happy to perform outside?

Yes, on solid, flat ground where there's cover from any weather and with a power supply nearby.

Do the clients have a say in what you play or is it a set repertoire list only?

More than happy to take a few requests to include in the setlist and can tailor the performance in a more general way based on your favourite artists and genres.

How do previous clients most commonly describe your performances?

Just take a look at my reviews! "Michael is relaxed, confident, professional and incredibly talented" "a great entertainer"
