Styles of world music for your event

world music

If you’re looking for some truly unique entertainment for your event, then why not book a World Music Ensemble near you today!

Regardless of whether you are organising a wedding, corporate dinner, cultural event or milestone birthday party, the varied genres of world music will not only open your eyes to other musical cultures, but often also the instruments, the history and background of an entire country.

In this blog, we’ll put together a guide of some of the most popular types of world musicians for events.

Call and response

Often found in A cappella styles, a call and response technique is when one part of the music is seemingly “answered” by another. Call and response is found throughout world music, and is also regularly used in contemporary pop.

Popular world music choices:

African music

Upbeat african music is a fantastic talking point for guests, and an excellent way to get people up and dancing.

It’s almost impossible to list the various forms that this could come in – African choirs use carefully constructed harmonies to give amazing and soulful performances,

African drum groups create intricate rhythms that are guaranteed to get everyone up on a dance floor and African live bands will perform all manner of music, using full instrumentation.

Indian music

Indian and Bollywood bands come in different shapes and sizes, ideal to suit any type of event. Guests can relax to the sounds of the sitar, tabla, and other indian percussion instruments.

Different rhythms

Cultures work within different rhythmic structures. Indian music, for example, follows the Tal, a repeating rhythm played by the tabla. The Tintal is the most common tal, which consists of 4 sections with 16 beats (4+4+4+4).

Caribbean Music

Hiring a steel band will add a touch of Caribbean cool to any event, playing traditional Caribbean calypso and reggae music.

Genre fusion

Thanks to globalisation and an ever connected world, we are now exposed more than ever to new music. Jazz musician Herbie Hancock copied pygmy hoots, originating from African music for his 1973 album, which was later sampled by Madonna and Australian aborigines successfully used Western rock music to campaign for land rights. The chances are you’ve listened to world music and been influenced by it simply by enjoying contemporary pop music.

Flamenco/ Spanish bands

If you love the music of famous flamenco artists like Paco De Lucia and Camaron De La Isla, then why not bring a touch of that Spanish guitar magic to your event? Flamenco music is passionate, expressive and exciting.

The Latin Duo show this off, to amazing effect!

Latin/ Salsa/ Mariachi bands

Salsa bands bring the most amazing afro-cuban rhythms to your event. Order up a large mojito, and the wonderful music wash over you, with everything from traditional salsa and latin classics like “Oye Como Va” to the soundtrack of the classic “Buena Vista Social Club”.

Ria perform some amazing Latin/ Salsa hits!
