2017 saw the big changes that the music industry has been experiencing recently continue, and so keeping up with the general discussion amongst fellow musicians (and the latest hints and tips!) is important.
In this blog, we reflect back on some of our “greatest hits” of 2017 and some of the interesting talking points they have generated. Don’t forget to read our blog on planning ahead as a musician for more helpful tips on preparing for the year ahead!
Instagram for musicians: our ultimate guide
Last year saw Instagram explode in popularity with musicians, working in sectors right across the industry. From function bands to singer-songwriters, many musicians are using their accounts to generate more buzz around their projects.
Discussion: are backing tracks stealing the jobs of other musicians?
Probably our most controversial blog of 2017 looked at the debate around backing tracks, and whether their use is taking work from live performers.
Most top bands use backing tracks to complete their live sound. Good use of backing tracks can significantly increase the enjoyment of the band and audience. In my experience using backing tracks is significantly more effort and work than having additional musicians. An artist or band successfully using backing tracks has put in a significant amount of work/preparation. It is not only the performance fee but travel and accommodation costs that need to be considered for each additional musician.

Which UK political party best represents the interests of professional musicians?
Upon the announcement of the snap general election, Last Minute Musicians held a survey of professional musicians, in order to gauge their beliefs and raise the profile of the issues that matter to them.
200 industry professionals responded and the survey proved fascinating, with some very interesting comments on the issues.
Here is a selection of views:
– They [Labour] have fairer, more realistic views on income tax… allowing working musicians to keep more of their earnings.
– I believe that the Liberal Democrat’s policy of challenging the terms of a ‘hard Brexit’ will give the UK the best chance of remaining a part of the single market and other trade agreements, which will in turn provide the U.K. with the best economic outcome. This will only benefit the music industry!
– I am a Tory and am confident that they represent most professions in one way or another. A stable economy engenders confidence in the Country and wealth is proportionally spread.

Top tips for buying and selling instruments online
Both purchasing and selling instruments online has become more popular than ever, so we teamed up with renowned instrument luthier Matthew Bascetta of Bascetta Stringed Instruments & Repairs and House of Tone Pickups to come up with a list of do’s and don’t for buying instruments. This is also the feature post of the UK Music Gear Exchange Facebook community.
One of Matt’s top tips was:
If there are any problems with your instrument, it may be worth looking into having it repaired before selling it, as the value added may outweigh the repair cost. Always consult with an expert and remember; trying to gloss over any problems, no matter how small, may come back to haunt you!
Taking payment as a band
Payment methods have changed a lot recently, with more and more musicians choosing to provide a card payment option for big transactions. In this blog, we examine the different options musicians have for taking payment.
Choosing the right microphone
In 2017, we teamed up with experienced producer and engineer Daniel J Logan of Orchard Studios to give some advice on choosing the right microphone for live and recording scenarios.
